"Drahtseilbahn-Marzili-Stadt Bern", just called Marzilibahn by everyone, is a funicular between the center of Bern near the Federal Palace and the quarter Marzili at the bank of the river Aare. It was built in 1885 and is still in use today. In the beginning the funicular was driven by the weight of water tanks that were filled at the top station to make them heavier than the lower wagon. In 1974 the drive system was changed to electricity and the wagons were replaced.
One of the old wagon is on display in a small park near the bottom station. The water tank at the bottom and especially the huge filler pipe (no, this is not an exhaust) are easy to see.
