12 sandstone sculptures are at this site, created by artists from all over the world. Another "off the beaten path" place to go that you won't regret. The Symposium was held in 1993, organized by Lawrence Beck.
This is an enjoyable day trip, but probably best to visit this in the winter while it isn't too hot. The sculptures are situated in the middle of a 2400 hectare flora/fauna preserve, with some nice hiking trails. I wore cross-trainer tennis shoes when I walked them, so none of the trails are what I would call severe hiking. It can be a long walk for small children, though. It's a long way to anything to drink from up there, so I fully recommend taking some water with you, especially if you visit this during summer months.
I was there in July of 2004, and remember little about any signage to get to the actual site, and don't seem to have any photos of any signs. I was probably more interested in what I was going to see than the signs leading me there. However, I do remember it was easy to find once you get on Nine Mile Road, and maps are available at the Broken Hill Visitors Centre. This sculpture site does not have an actual address that I can determine (as is the case with many Outback attractions). However, it is approximately 10 km north of Broken Hill City Centre, approximately 2 km off Nile Mile Road
According to the Broken Hill tourism web site, there is a $10 fee per vehicle, or if you choose to take the group bus option, there are $4 admissions available. I'm sure there are other discounts available for pensioners. I'm guessing, but I would assume that access would be limited to the normal business hours of the visitor centre, whatever those might be. I never thought to check that, either, nor would I remember it if I had.
A single waymark for this site can't really do it justice, nor placing it in a single category seems like a good idea. I like outdoors attractions, especially flora/fauna and hiking related attractions. We spotted several wallabies in the area, as well as desert pea, and even a couple eagles. A couple hours out here is about all it takes to explore the trail and the sculpture site, but take your time. You will most certainly enjoy the views from atop the hills.
