He is usually depicted as an old man with a long gray beard, especially when being used to represent the end of the current year.
In other cases, this one included, he is a much younger figure with wings. The wings indicating how time flies, in this case this is reinforced with the Latin phrase ‘Tempus Fugit’. In Greek mythology he is one of the primordial deities.
Dyson’s was a jeweller and watchmaker and this impressive clock was used to advertise his business as one of distinction. It was erected at a time before the UK had adopted Greenwich Mean Time and each city operated on their own time.
Dyson's had a telegraphic link that signalled 13:00 at Greenwich. This meant that people could set their watches to London Time or Railway Time in the days before Greenwich Mean Time was adopted throughout the whole country.
When the telegraphic signal was received a 'Time Ball' dropped on a pole as a visual signal.
