A empresa iniciou a actividade no ano de 1979, com a forma jurídica de sociedade por quotas entre dois sócios, na loja que ocupa ainda hoje localizada no centro histórico de Guimarães. A actividade da empresa abarcava dois sectores: livraria e papelaria, e impressão gráfica, para além de outros serviços complementares como por exemplo a encadernação.

Em 1986 a empresa separa fisicamente os seus dois sectores deslocando o sector da impressão gráfica para a freguesia de Madredeus.

Em 1987, a empresa adquire a sua primeira máquina de impressão de grande formato e realiza na loja que ainda hoje ocupa, obras de adaptação, necessárias para a separação física dos dois sectores. É neste ano que o espaço da loja vocacionou-se apenas para o sector de papelaria e livraria.

Em 1998, no âmbito do PROCOM com a colaboração da ACIG, a Ideal realiza um investimento de 100.000 euros, entre obras de adaptação, informatização, mobiliário de exposição, e cria dois postos de trabalho. Neste momento decide-se também expandir a actividade comercial da empresa abrindo-a à área dos materiais para as artes plásticas e arquitectura.

Em 2005, a gestão procedeu à separação jurídica dos dois sectores de actividade em duas empresas, mantendo-se no entanto os mesmos sócios fundadores.

Actualmente a Ideal dirige-se a um público – alvo essencialmente jovem, dos 12 aos 18 anos, que a procura para adquirir material escolar, e a um publico mais adulto com paixão pela leitura e pala cultura.

The company's activity covers two areas: the bookstore and stationery, and print graphics in addition to other complementary services such as binding.

In 1986 the company physically separates its two sectors moving the graphics printing industry for the parish of Madredeus.

In 1987, the company acquires its first printing machine large format and performs in the store that still holds today, adaptation works, necessary for the physical separation of the two sectors. This is the year that the store space is only vocational sector for the stationery and bookstore.

In 2005, management carried out the legal separation of the two sectors in two companies, maintaining however the same founders.
