Newburyport has an inviting and lively downtown area thanks in large part to the newly refurbished Mayor Peter J. Matthews Memorial Boardwalk. Originally build in 1977 this promenade along the historic Newburyport Harbor was renamed to honor its former city councilor and mayor.
The boardwalk offers wonderful views of this busy harbor and well used marinas. There are historic monuments, gardens, ample seating, and a large open common area along the way. The boardwalk is only one block away and runs parallel to a vibrant, restored downtown shopping area which features restaurants, boutique shops, a maritime museum and, of course, several places to obtain ice cream, fudge and even authentic gelato.
The coordinates are for the eastern end of the boardwalk.
Length: 1500 feet
Physically Challenged Accessible?: yes
