Additional information:

Joseph Foster, a Canadian pioneer, moved from Wisconsin to the northwest in 1853. Foster was a prominant pioneer who served in the early formation of the state of Washington as a territorial legislator (he served for 22 years), he was also first superintendent of schools in Tukwila, and a well-respected local leader, owner of the Foster Landing, where riverboats stopped to load and unload goods and passengers. He was known as the "Father of Tukwila" (first named Foster, Washington). Foster's well-known home on the bank of the Duwamish River is now the site of Fort Dent Park. The location served as a military base during 1850s Indian Wars.

Foster is well known for a particular bill that was introduced by him and approved by the legislature in 1883: the Woman Suffrage bill, which lead to towns being voited as “dry” and banned brothels and game rooms.

The maple tree is said to be Tukwila’s oldest maple tree.
