In 1906 a small permanent chapel dedicated to St. Matthias was built in Brinkley Road, Worcester Park and opened for worship the same year. It was a plain little brick chapel seating sixty-five people.
In the early 1960s it was decided a new larger church was needed and Architects Messrs Tomei & Maxwell were engaged to draw up plans. Building work started and the church was opened for worship on 24th February 1966.
The Architecture is Romanesque in style and the overall plan is cruciform with two transepts and a campanile. It is built with Sussex and Dorking Bricks and the upper portion of the Tower is of Portland Stone.
In the porch beneath the Campanile is a piece of the Foundation Stone from the old Church in Brinkley Road and inscribed on it are the words:
"This Church was built by the people of Worcester Park to the Glory of God and was officially opened by His Grace Archbishop Cyril C Cowderoy on the 24th, February 1966. The Church was Consecrated by Bishop Charles Henderson VG, KCHS on the 30 May 1977."
The church has an excellent website with a superb “History of our parish” section. Well worth a read. See link below. Some of the above text was edited from here, thank you.
