The Brussels town hall is a Gothic structure located on the Grand Place. It was constructed between 1402 and 1420 to a design of Jacob van Thienen. The building was expanded twice starting in 1444.
The 96 meters high Brabantine Gothic style steeple was designed by Jan van Ruysbroek, the court architect of Philip the Good. it was completed in 1455. On top of the the spire is a 5 meter tall statue of Archangel Michael, the patron saint of Brussels, slaying a devil represented as a dragon.
