Expedition Island is the site where Major Powell began his 1869 explorations of the Green River. This island is located in the Green River with an automobile bridge connecting it to one shore and a pedestrian bridge connecting it to the other shore.
The City and Sweetwater County have joined up and created a small artificial white water park at Expedition Island Park on the Green River. The park has two small man-made rapids and a bit of an obstacle course on the back channel ending on low dam.
At the tip of the island, rocks have been placed so that kayakers can "play" in the rapids. Short rodeo kayaks are used to perform freestyle maneuvers in the rapids created by these rocks.
In the north channel of the river around the island, kayak competition courses are set up with pylons for competition courses.
It's free to come play in the rapids and there's an entry fee for the competition courses when setup. A map to the course is available online.
Due to winter rains the river was extremely high during my visit and waves were covering the rocks used at the man-made rapids.
