We were on the 15th century and a man was hunting or herding cattle, outside the boundaries of Almonte in a place called La Rocina.
It was a bad place with bad soil with lots of weeds and bushes only accessible to birds and beasts.
The barking of his dogs called his attention to something hidden in that jungle so he forgot his fears and followed his natural instinct and curiosity and penetratad at his own expenses in the midst of the thorns. It was not without surprise that he found, intact, in the middle of the thorns, an image of the Queen of Angels placed on a trunk of a tree. The image of natural size, dressed in a white and green linin tunic it was beaty himself.

Amazed with so precious as unexpected finding, the man filled wanted to show everybody his discovery so he removed part of that closed forest, pulled the image on his shoulders and took it in the direction of the Village of Almonte, three leagues from that place where he intended to place it.
The work was hard and the man was tired so he fell asleep.
When he awoke he found himself without the sacred image. He returned to where he had seen the image first, and found it there as before.

He returned to Almonte, told what happened and returned to show the villagers his found. Everybody was astonished by the beauty of the image and by the fact that the beautifull image was unharmed even after beeing exposed to the inclemency of the weather, rain, sunshine and storms for long time.

Possessed by devotion and respect the villagers removed the weeds and cleared that jungle. A small chapel was made and an altar was built to place the image in a way that the trunk where the image was found served as a pedestal.

And a new village was found with the name of La Virgen de Las Rocinas (Today El Rocio)

Acording to the legend this happened in the 15th century (around the year 1600), but, the chronicles of the King Alfonso X told us that in the year 1270 the King ordered the construction of a small chappel devoted to the Virgin Mary in a place called Las Rocinas (300 years before).
