The Palacio de Comunicaciones (also known asPalacio de Cibeles) is a building in the center of Madrid.
The building is located on the Plaza de Cibeles, on part of the former Gardens of Buen Retiro. This choice wasn´t very popular with Madrid population at the time because it was one less recreation area.
Construction started in 1907 and was officially inaugurated in the 14th march of 1919 as the most modern post office, telephones and telegraph station. After some modification thebuilding starts to host some departments from Madrid City Hall.
The building is seen as one of the first exemples of the modern Spanish architecture and one of Madrid landmarks.
The façade was designed by the young architects Antonio Palacios y Joaquín Otamendi as the headquarters of the Sociedad de Correos y Telégrafos de España (Spanish Post office and telephones).
In 1993 was declared a Building of National Interest and in the beguinning of the 21th century became Madrid City Hall.
Recently has been added a big glass cupola that is possible to visit. From 2007 it houses the Town Hall of Madrid.
