Rocha da Pena, Algarve, Portugal - Established Rock Climbing Areas on Waymarking.com

Rocha da Pena is a popular climbing site in Algarve.
It´s located in the Algarve interior, near Salir.
It´s a cliff of red and white limestone facing south Rock from 10 to 25 meters high.
It´s a great place to climb but you must be aware of the temperature.
In winter the best time is at the middle of the day.
In the summer we advise you to start early in the morning and stop around 10h00 because the rock is facing south directly to the sun and temperatures can get very high.
New routes are well equiped but in the old ones i dont know. The first protection is normally a bit high so be carefull when you start.

There are no hotels or campings nearby. Most of them are located near the sea. You may try to find a Rural Hotel (Turismo Rural. There are a few in the area).

To go to Rocha da Pena:
If you come from Portimão or Lagos take the direction to S. Bartolomeu de Messines
If you come from North (Lisbon or Porto) follow the road (National or Highway) to Algarve and get out in S. Bartolomeu de Messines
From Messines take the road to Benefim, going in direction to village of Salir.

If you come from east (Faro, Tavira, Spain) follow the direction to Loulé then follow the road to Tor / Salir

In salir ask for Rocha da Pena and/or the "Bar of Grutas" and go by car more 6 Km .

Let your car at the Bar das Grutas parking at the sugested coordinates. The owner of the bar is very used to the climbers in and out and will help you if needed. Ask him for a topo guide.

From the bar you can walk to the cliff (unless you have a 4x4). Some sectors are difficult to find, because the cliff is out of sight by the forest.

Since you will probably have a GPS forget all i said and follow the arrow.
