A estátua:
O Monumento a D. Pedro IV situa-se na Praça da Liberdade, na cidade do Porto, em Portugal.
É uma estátua equestre da autoria do escultor Célestin Anatole Calmels. A primeira pedra foi posta em 9 de Julho de 1862. Foi inaugurado em 19 de Outubro de 1866. Tem 10 metros de altura e cinco toneladas de bronze.
A estátua de bronze apresenta D. Pedro IV vestido com a farda de caçadores 5 e sobre ela uma placa (espécie de sobrecasaca) que era o seu traje habitual; na mão direita segura a Carta Constitucional de 1826 e na esquerda as rédeas do cavalo.

D. Pedro IV:
Rei de Portugal entre 1826 e 1834, D. Pedro IV foi o primeiro imperador do Brasil. Viajou para o Brasil com a restante família real em 1807, logo após a primeira invasão francesa. Na sequência da Revolução de 1820, em Portugal, as cortes determinam o seu regresso à metrópole, mas D. Pedro recusa-se a embarcar para a Europa. Foi então que, como líder do movimento independentista daquela colónia, decide proclamar junto às margens do rio Ipiranga a independência do Brasil (1822). Logo depois é proclamado imperador do Brasil.
Após a morte de seu pai D. João VI, em 1826, D. Pedro é designado rei de Portugal pela regente D. Isabel Maria e outorga aos portugueses a Carta Constitucional de 1826. Quis abdicar em favor de sua filha, D. Maria da Glória (futura rainha D. Maria II), mas a guerra civil travada entre liberais, liderados por D. Pedro, e absolutistas, liderados por seu irmão D. Miguel, que também pretendia o trono, adiou a coroação de D. Maria até 1834.

The Statue:
The Monument to D. Pedro IV is located in Liberty Square in the city of Porto in Portugal.
It is an equestrian statue by the sculptor Celestin Anatole Calmels. The first stone was laid on July 9, 1862. It was inaugurated on 19 October 1866. There are 10 feet tall and five tons of bronze.
The bronze statue shows D. Pedro IV dressed in the hunter uniform and a plate on it (kind of coat) that was his usual, the right hand holds the Constitutional Charter of 1826 and left the reins.

King of Portugal between 1826 and 1834, D. Pedro IV was the first emperor of Brazil. He traveled to Brazil with the rest of the royal family in 1807, shortly after the first French invasion. Following the 1820 Revolution in Portugal, the courts determine his return to the metropolis, but D. Pedro IV refuses to leave for Europe. Then, as leader of the independence movement of that colony, decided to proclaim the banks of the Ipiranga River Brazil's independence (1822). Soon after it is proclaimed Emperor of Brazil.
