Mackinac Island Is located in Lake Huron. To get to this beautiful place you can take a ferry from the Michigan mainland at Mackinaw City on the lower peninsula or from St. Ignace on the upper peninsula. Once you are on the island your only modes of transportation will be a bike, horse drawn carriage or your feet. There are no motorized vehicles allowed on the island except for emergency vehicles and in the winter, snowmobiles.

Mackinac Island is a favorite tourist destination. There are many historic places to see there, such as Ft. Mackinac, Indian Dormitory, Round Island Lighthouse, Arch Rock and more. The island also has many events throughout the year. The one that brought us to the island was the Lilac Festival held for 10 days in June. Others include the Festival of the Horse in July, the Chicago Yacht Club's Race to Mackinac, Music Festival and Fudge Festival in August, and Civil War Reenactors in September. There are many places to stay on the island including Bed and Breakfasts, Inns and Hotels. The most famous is the Grand Hotel with its 660 ft. front porch. it was used as the setting for the movie "Somewhere In Time." Geocachers will also love Mackinac Island. There are over 100 caches on the island.
