Get Your Kicks on Route 66
US Highway 66, no longer a federal highway, has been immortalized in the Steinbeck novel "The Grapes of Wrath", a movie based on the novel, a song by Bobbie Troup, a TV series, a National Back Country Byway, and an intense overseas marketing effort to bring foreign tourists in droves to travel "The Mother Road" in caravans of large tour buses.
The longest remaining continuous segment of the old highway pavement runs from Topock to Seligman, Arizona. This portion of the old route lies in the western half of this stretch and extends from just west of Kingman into Topock.
One of the main attractions along this piece of the old route is the old mining town of Oatman and the herd of wild burros who come into town every day to cadge treats from generous tourists. But if you're not quick enough with the handouts they can get mean and nasty. And don't walk up behind one. Their instinct is to kick out backward to drive off this "predator" trying to sneak up on it.
