It is thought that Methodism has begun in Portugal in 1853 south of Oliveira de Azeméis, with the arrival of the Engineer Thomas Chegwin to the mines of Palhal. Some years later there was already a Methodist class in Porto and Gaia, and in 1871 this was officially founded the Protestant religion.
At the March 25, 1877 was inaugurated the Church of Mirante, which has always been the epicenter of the Methodist work in the region. The facilities were expanded in 1908 and 30 years later were placed in the beautiful facade neo-manueline tiles authored by a member of the Church, Delfim Gonçalves Vieira (with the collaboration of the painter João Augusto Ribeiro), performed by the Fábrica de Cerâmicas de Sacavém. Only during the year of 1938, this temple was recognized by the civil authorities, with the status of the Cultural Association.
