The Colne Valley is a steep sided valley in the Pennine Hills in West Yorkshire. The River Colne flows along the valley bottom, together with a canal built in 1811.

The river rises just above the town of Marsden and at this point the sign is about ½ mile away. Both the railway and canal pass through tunnels at this point and the sign is not far from the exit of the tunnels.

During the industrial revolution the valley made use of the fast flowing river to power mills, and later moved to using steam power.

The sign is inspired by the river, canal and its industrial heritage. The reference to Standedge Tunnel is because the sign is in the grounds of the visitor centre. It is the longest, deepest and highest canal tunnel in Britain. It was closed in 1944, but was re-opened in 2001 for leisure use.

In the summer months the visitor centre runs boat trips into the tunnel.
