The Welby Inn was built as a spacious Dutch Gambrel home in 1900 by Henry Heckman. The home was built as a summer cottage by local ship builders.
During World War II it was briefly occupied by the Coast Guard. The house was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Howe in 1946. Mrs. Howe and her family ran "Howe's Guest House" for thirty eight summers.
At the end of the Howe's tenancy, the house became the Welby Inn owned by David and Elizabeth Knox. The Welby Inn has been a Maine coast bed and breakfast for over twenty years. The Welby continues in Mrs. Howe's tradition to offer warm, small seaside community hospitality with comfortable rooms and gourmet breakfasts.
