In Norse mythology trolls are troublesome beings said to dwell in isolated mountains, rocks, and caves, sometimes live together in small family units.

In Scandinavian folklore trolls are depicted as large, dim witted, and ugly. They are sometimes described as man-eaters and will turn to stone upon contact with sunlight. Landmark stones were associated with such unfortunate trolls. The tale of "Three Billy Goats Gruff" is probably the most familiar tale involving a troll.
