Margaret Laurence, an internationally renowned author, was born and raised in Neepawa. She was born in 1926. Her mother died when she was 4 and her father died 5 years later. She then lived here in her grandfather's house from l935 to l944. Neepawa provided the setting for five of her later novels set in the fictional prairie town of Manawaka.

Personal Experience:
When we lived in Neepawa, this was always the Margaret Laurence House but it was until 1986 that it was purchased by Margaret Laurence Home Committee for restoration and in 1987 it was designated a Manitoba Provincial Heritage Site. Today we visited the grounds but didn't have time to explore the house.
