Nearly 70 steps climb the terraces that rise 70’ above the Japanese Garden at Terrace Park in Sioux Falls. The park, originally part of the Phillips estate, was later acquired by the city, and in 1922 Frederick Spellerberg, Sioux Falls fist park superintendent developed the land with a series of terraces. The steps are historic, having been built in 1923, created from quartzite which was mined in this area. The steps have withstood a lot of use over the years and show almost no sign of wear. The stairway is divided into 6 groupings each separated by a quartzite landing; each section includes 9-14 steps. There are three sets of these long terraced steps. The top of the bluff has a shelter and play area and offers a scenic view of Covell Lake at the lower level of the park.
