Hosök tere is one of the major squares of Budapest, Hungary. At the center of Heroes' Square is the Millennium Memorial with statues of the leaders of the seven tribes that founded Hungary in the 9th century and other outstanding figures of Hungarian history. The construction of the memorial was started when Hungary's celebrated its 1000th anniversary in 1896. The square was finished in 1900.
When the monument was originally constructed, Hungary was a part of the Austrian Empire and thus the last five spaces for statues on the left of the colonnade were reserved for members of the ruling Habsburg dynasty. Once the Habsburgs were overthrown their statues were replaced by Hungarian patriots and statesman.
The following statesmen are portrayed by the sculptures in the semi-circular arcades of the monument: Stephen I, St. Ladislaus, Coloman, Andrew II, Béla IV, Charles I, Ladislaus IV, Louis I, Louis the Great, John Hunyadi, Matthias Corvinus, István Bocskay, Gabriel Bethlen, Imre Thökölym, Francis II Rákóczi, and Lajos Kossuth. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is located in the middle of the square.
