The first Hindu temple of Basel was founded in 1985. It had to move several times when it became too small. In the late 1990s there were two additional temples founded.
A group of young Tamil immigrants managed to bring the different maintaining organizations together and let them join forces. In 2004 the former temples were abandoned and the new unified temple of Basel was founded in the industrial area Dreispitz in the East end of the city.
Most Hindus in Switzerland (over 80%) are Tamil immigrants from Sri Lanka, other proveniences and local convertites are very small minorities. That is why their website is only in Tamil with a small German section.
