In Boston, at the entrance to the 'New' Boston Garden sports arena where the Boston Bruins and Celtics play their home games, is a life-sized bronze statue of Bobby Orr frozen in a leap and face frozen is a triumphant expression.

Bobby Orr played most of his career with the Boston Bruins hockey team, one of the 'original six' that formed the National Hockey League. He was born as Robert Gordon Orr in Parry Sound, Ontario in 1948. He signed with the Boston Bruins for an amateur contract when he was 14. He joined the Bruins as a professional in the 1967-8 season, wearing Number 4.

Orr was a huge factor in the Bruins winning the Stanley Cup in 1970 and 1972. This statue is based on a photograph taken during the 1970 Stanley Cup playoffs, on May 10, against the St. Louis Blues. Bobby Orr, No. 4, scored the fourth and winning goal in the fourth period (really Overtime), during the fourth and deciding game of the playoffs. The picture was snapped just as he was passing by the goal, the puck visible in the crease. He was some three feet in the air, horizontal, which leads one to wonder how he lands after the picture. However, the face is jubulant as his limbs were extended and the stick in the air. It's one of the most memorable sports images in history. See the link below to see it. Bobby became a free agent in the 1975-6 season and for a while, was with the Chicago Blackhawks. However, his knees were done for, and he retired in 1979. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame the same year. In Boston, his number, 4, has been retired.

Bobby Orr was an incredible skater and scorer. His position was Defenseman, and he showed how a Defenseman can be effective in offence as well.

Orr was briefly a coach for the Black Hawks, then, later did endorsements for local companies, including Baybank. One of his most recent public appearances was as a flag bearer during the Winter Olympics at Vancouver in 2010.

This statue was installed in May 10, 2010, exactly 40 years after that memorable goal. Bobby Orr was present and gave a speech on that occasion, thanking the fans for their support. The name inscribed, assumed to be the artist, is H. Weber.

Speaking of Vancouver, this waymark is being submitted as the Boston Bruins and the Vancouver Canucks are playing in the seventh game of the Stanley Cup Finals - 06/15/2010. Will there be another legend born then?
