The Leeds Liverpool canal is 127 miles long and built in stages. This part of the canal opened in 1774.
The canal has a number of staircase locks on the canal.
In this case there are 3 locks in the staircase in a rural stretch of the canal between Idle and Esholt. Staircase locks have no intermediate pound in between each lock and the gate of the upper lock leads directly into the lower lock.
They are more difficult to use than locks with separate pounds and so are usually operated by lock keepers. There are however instructions at the lock in case there is no lock keeper.
