At this location you are on the route of a buried canal across the flank of Awbrey Butte, which is an old deeply weathered shield volcano that is at least 4 million years old. There are great exposures along the trail of the thin flows that make up the shield volcano. To the north across the river is a broad expanse of younger lavas which originate from Newberry Volcano south of Bend. Newberry Volcano is a massive shield shaped composite volcano which covers some 500 square miles (an oval shaped area about 30 miles north-south and 20 miles east-west). Over the last 700,000 years a series of large lava flows have gradually pushed the Deschutes River westward. Some of these large flows traveled 30 miles from their source. At this location the river hss cut a canyon along edge the basalt of Bend which is about 78,000 years old and comes from a buried vent (covered by younger flows) on the north flank of Newberry. This flow extends northward all the way to Redmond, underlies most of Bend east of the Deschutes River, and is the same flow in which Lava River Cave is located. Imagine what a flow of that size would do to the area today.
