One of the features at
Ferry Farm
is the demonstration garden located behind the Visitor Center. Ferry Farm is the site of George Washington's
boyhood home
. The plants in the garden include flowers, crops and herbs that were grown during the Colonial era and indigenous to Virginia such as tobacco, cotton, peanuts, watermelon, and, of course, cherry trees.
The demonstration garden has mulched paths which interlace through the various plots. Each species is identified with a tag. Someone usually is in attendance who can answer any questions.
The garden is also a certified wildlife habitat. There are birdfeeding stations and birdbaths.
See George Washington's Ferry Farm
