Occupying the site of the former Mappin & Webb jewellery showrooms, No 1 Poulty is a landmark building in The City designed by James Stirling and completed in 1998, six years after his death. Housing office and retail space as well as Le Coq d'Argent restaurant on its top floor and the tube station underneath, No 1 Poulty is located above the original Roman Londinium. A major archaeological dig necessitated by the construction of the current building was undertaken by the Museum of London Archeological Service and revealed Roman remains including mosaic flooring and timbers. Particularly significant was a wooden drain along the main Roman road dating back to 47 AD which provided useful evidence for a precise date for the founding of Roman London. The prominently post-modern building we see today, with its pink and beige stone stripes and prow-like front, may appear modern but it does reference the old Mappin & Webb building, John Belcher's splendid neo-gothic Victorian construction is honoured in the geometric shapes, cut out triangles and squares.
