Construction began in 1597 and ended in 1603, and continuously since, the place has been occupied by a theater the plaza in front has been known as Plaza of comedies and now, as Plaça del Teatre. The original building would have the structure of a comedy theater in wood, and was rebuilt several times, in 1728-1729 it was expanded and the building was built in stone. On October 27, 1787 was a fire that destroyed it completely. Rebuilt thanks to donations from nobles as Marqués de Ciutadilla and Conde de El Asalto, the new theater, most sumptuous, was inaugurated on November 4, 1788.

Ancient engravings show the XVIII century facade, flat and two bodies, with three semicircular arches and paired Ionic columns flanked at the bottom, and Ionic pilasters and gable windows on the second (higher plant), with railing on the architrave of the first body. Terminated the facade a semicircular pediment in the center, and balustrade with vases on the sides. In 1847 he added a balcony to the front and decorated with pieces of terracotta busts of actors and characters in the lower body (some are still preserved) and bas-relief with winged figures at the top, and disappeared. The facade adopted a convex shape at its center. In the fires and subsequent reforms of the twentieth century, these elements have disappeared in most cases, keeping the curved shape of the facade and window and door openings.
