Planning of this power plant started in the late 1960's. The building started in 1975 and has been finished in 1982.
The first lawsuit started in 1976, just a year after the ground-breaking ceremony. Main reason was the geological instability of the Rhine-Valley especially in the area of the power-plant. Therefore the possibility of a earth quake is given.
The test of operation has been started in spring 1986 and regular operation started in autumn 1986 but has been stopped after a short time. It has been restarted in summer 1987.
In 1988 the operation has been stopped forever by courtdecision. Ironically the plant has been build 70m away from the position stated in the permission to be more safe in the case of eartquakes. The highest court in Germany (Bundesverwaltungsgerichtet) decided all prior given permissions to be invalid and stopped the operation of the plant.
The owner decided later not get new permissions because the public opinions about nuclear plant has been changed and the mood was against them.
At the end there the owner has invested about 3.5 Billion € and has been able to operate it for less than 2 years. Perhaps this has been the most expensive electricity ever.
