The bronze plaque on the stone end of the Gooseberry Falls Bridge reads: “Minnesota Highway Department Bridge #3585, 1937, but it is known to tourists as the “Gooseberry Falls Bridge.” An historical marker tells the story behind the bridge-building at Gooseberry Falls State Park.
“Bridge to Open Across Gooseberry River.
“Before the automobile, the old North Shore ‘wagon road’ was chosen to allow for the shortest and cheapest bridges. With the coming of high speed travel and increased tourism in the 1920’s, rerouting the road to follow the Lake Superior shoreline and building bridges became necessary.
“In 1925, a single-lane bridge designed and constructed to span a steep and rocky space opened across the Gooseberry River gorge. You are standing on the old road’s center lane.”
Historic photos show the appearance of the bridge throughout the years. The dated marker is embedded in the stone bridge end which joins the rest of the CCC work that was done in this park.
