This obelisk dominates the market square in this old city.

It is thought that this obelisk is England's oldest. It was erected in 1702 and replaced the old worn and decayed market cross.

At 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. daily the Ripon Hornblower has stood at all four corners of the obelisk and before that the market cross and announced the beginning and the end of the watch using a large natural horn.
