In the 4th century A.D. in the city of Constantinople, present day Istanbul, there once stood a great Byzantine triumphal arch from which all distances to all corners of the empire were measured. In the heart of Istanbul today, all that remains of this reference arch is a stone pillar. It is recessed several feet down in the ground and protected by a stone wall. A small gate and a sign (in English) explain its significance.
