A sign on the roadside when you enter Machynlleth from the north side over the river Dyfi. It was the original capital of wales and the first place of power in 1404 for Owain Glyndwr; Prince of Wales.
The origin of the name "Machynlleth" is as many Welsh names in fact simply a description of the location. For example Aberystwyth is a description of 'mouth-Ystwyth' or 'the mouth of the River Ystwyth'
So breaking it down:-
1. ma - prefix : plain, field
2. Cynllaith : personal name

The ma- at the beginning of the place name is more often seen at the end of words as -fa (plain, field). This can be seen in Bleddfa, for example.

Cynllaith is a personal name which may also occur in the river name Cynllaith in Denbighshire.

Local dialect explains the change from -llaith to -lleth.

Some antiquarians have incorrectly identified the place name with the Roman Maglona.
