The bridge was first mentioned in 1272, but until 1808 both banks of the river were in the same country, Austria. Then it became a border crossing between Switzerland and Germany. Until 1979 it was also used for motorized traffic, since then it is for pedestrians and bikers only.
Today the border is usually unmanned, the customs stations are on both sides of the bridge and are now mostly closed. The exact border is marked with a white line in the bridge and a small plaque.
