Rideau Hall has been the home of every governor general since 1867. There are 32 hectares of rolling lawns, winding paths, forests and gardens. There are also more than 10,000 trees on the grounds. Some of the trees of Rideau Hall perform a symbolic function. Many are marked with plaques indicating they have been specially planted by a visiting head of State, a member of the Royal Family, or other dignitaries to mark an important event or anniversary. Since Prince Arthur planted a red oak in 1906, planting ceremonial trees has become a Canadian Tradition, symbolizing the living friendship and co-operation of nations. (From Self-Guided Tour Brochure).
Historic Event:
The tree is historic as it was planted on the grounds of the Governor-General of Canada by then visiting Nelson Mandela, President of the Republic of South Africa.
