The medieval Cathedral of Monreale is is considered greatest example of Norman architecture in the world. It was begun in 1174 and finished in less than eight years later, in 1182. It is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
As you enter the Cathedral you will be astonished to find that virtually the entire interior of the Cathedral: all the walls, arches, soffits, and jambs are covered with biblical mosaic images in extremely bright colors against a gold background. The surface area covered by mosaics is an astounding 68,000 sq. ft. (6,500 sq. m) and contains more than 4,000 lbs (2,200 kg) of pure gold. It's an absolutely stunning and amazing place to visit.
