Johann Hager immigrated to the American colonies from Germany in 1736. In 1739 he purchased land on the western frontier of Maryland and built the house that still stands today. Hager used rough fieldstone to build a fortress-like dwelling that could be defended if necessary. The house straddled two springs to ensure a water supply in case of a siege.
The floor plan of the 3 1/2 story home is in the "German style" with a massive central hearth and "dutch biscuit" insulation. Hager married a German woman from the area, and as they prospered they acquired more and more land, eventually founding Hagerstown in 1762.
Today the restored home is a museum outfitted with authentic furnishing from the period. It is open April through December on Thursday-Saturday 10 am to 4 pm.
