On August 29, 2005, hurricane Katrina sent a 12 foot storm surge inland at Biloxi, MS that caused vast damage and death for this city and others along the Gulf Coast. By February 15, 2006, the city had built this Katrina Memorial on the town square. The memorial is 12 feet high, the height of the water that flooded in at land fall. On the semi-circular concrete wall of the memorial, a mosaic of rolling waves was created by artist Elizabeth Veglia with glass pieces of yellows, blues and greens as the major colors. The architect for the memorial was Dennis Cowart and the contractor was Roy Anderson Corp. An interesting display of artifacts gathered up from the debris after the storm is in a glass display case that divides the memorial from the image of the wave to the listing of the dead and missing that is etched in black marble.
