When waymarking visitors approach the pink parliament buildings from the north, they will see three buildings. The centre building hosts The Senate. The building to the west contains the House of Assembly. The building to the east (under renovation during 2011) contains a variety of government offices.

According to an historical plaque in the vicinity of these buildings, this property, eventually known as the Public Lot, was purchased in about 1790 from John Brown (a member of the Governor's Council). The centre building had been constructed prior to 1790. After some renovation, the top floor of that building became the home of the House of Assembly (1796-1805) and the Governor's Council. By 1841, the Governor's Council had been divided into executive and legislative councils which met elsewhere. The eastern and western buildings were erected in 1804 and 1805, respectively. The House of Assembly then moved to the upper floor of the western building.

According to another nearby plaque, the general assembly in The Bahamas had been created by King George the Second (of the United Kingdom) in September 1729 after the efforts of Governor Woodes Rogers. The plaque does not indicate where the assembly convened.

My research on line and through Bahamian reference material in Library and Archives Canada provided little information concerning the parliament buildings. However, I did find mention of events which take place on the grounds. There will occassionally be an inspection of the Guard of Honour and on the last Friday of each month high-tea is hosted by the governor. Both events are usually attended by the Royal Bahamas Police Force Band.
