Erzherzog Eugen wurde 1863 als jüngster Sohn des Erzherzogs Karl Ferdinand von Habsburg-Lothringen, einem Sohn des Erzherzogs Karl von Österreich-Teschen geboren.

Eugen schlug, wie zwei seiner älteren Brüder, eine militärische Laufbahn ein. Wie alle Mitglieder der Familie Habsburg erlernte er auch ein Handwerk als „zivilen“ Beruf, in seinem Fall Tischler.

Im Jahr 1898 erwarb er die Festung Hohenwerfen in Salzburg und ließ diese zu seinem Fürstensitz ausbauen. Dort befand sich auch seine große Kunst- und Waffensammlung. Als die Festung 1931 durch Unachtsamkeit zu großen Teilen niederbrannte finanzierte er deren Wiederaufbau. 1938 musste er das Anwesen an die nationalsozialistische Gauleitung verkaufen.

Erzherzog Eugen folgte seinem Onkel Erzherzog Wilhelm als letzter weltlicher Hochmeister des Deutschen Ordens nach. Unter der Führung von Erzherzog Eugen wurde dieser zu einem rein geistlichen Orden umgewandelt. Als Oberhaupt des Deutschen Ordens war er auch seit 1894 Inhaber des berühmten Infanterieregiments „Hoch- und Deutschmeister“ Nr. 4. 1916 wurde er Feldmarschall und war Befehlshaber der Süd-Westfront im Ersten Weltkrieg.

Archduke Eugen was born in 1863 as the youngest son of Archduke Karl Ferdinand of Habsburg-Lorraine, a son of Archduke Karl of Austria-Teschen.

Eugene suggested that two of his older brothers, one a military career. Like all members of the Habsburg family he also learned a trade as a "civilian" job, in his case, a carpenter.

In 1898 he acquired the Fortress of Salzburg in throwing and let them develop to his princely residence. There was also his great art and collection of weapons. When the fortress in 1931 by carelessness largely burned down, he financed the reconstruction. In 1938 he had to sell the property to the Nazi Gauleiter.

Archduke Eugen followed his uncle, Archduke Wilhelm secular as the last Grand Master of the Teutonic Order after. Under the leadership of Archduke Eugen of these was converted to a purely religious orders. As head of the Teutonic Order since 1894, he was also owner of the famous infantry regiment "high-and German masters" No. 4 In 1916 he was field marshal and commander of the South-Western Front in World War II.
