Montpelier, formerly the home of James and Dolley Madison, has over 1500 acres of woodland which includes the 200-acre Monpelier Forest or the James Madison Landmark Forest. These old-growth woods have been virtually undisturbed and are acclaimed as the best example of a mature forest in the Piedmont. The trees include oaks, poplars, and hickories that are 200-300 years old. The undergrowth includes dogwoods, redbuds, spicebush, virginia creeper, honeysuckle, and grapevines.

There is a self-guided tourClick for related waymark to open in new window on 2 miles of trails that loop through the forest.
