Montpelier Forest - Orange County VA - U.S. National Natural Landmarks on Waymarking.com

Montpelier, formerly the home of James and Dolley Madison, has over 1500 acres of woodland which includes the 200-acre Monpelier Forest or the James Madison Landmark Forest. These old-growth woods have been virtually undisturbed and are acclaimed as the best example of a mature forest in the Piedmont. The trees include oaks, poplars, and hickories that are 200-300 years old. The undergrowth includes dogwoods, redbuds, spicebush, virginia creeper, honeysuckle, and grapevines.

There is a self-guided tour on 2 miles of trails that loop through the forest. Informational signs along the trails point out the plant species and other facts of interest. Free maps are available at the Visitor Center. There are also quarterly guided tours, one for each season.
