The
US Naval Academy Chapel is an important feature in the Academy grounds being recognized as a
National Historic Landmark. The corner stone for the chapel was laid in June, 1904 by Admiral George Dewey. Four years later in May, 1908, Chaplain Henry Clark led a dedication service. Just twenty years after completion, the outside of the chapel dome began to crumble. The original terra cotta dome was replaced by a durable copper layer. The chapel dome can be seen from much of Annapolis.
The inside dome of the chapel has a ring of arched windows at the base. The dome itself is adorned with 160 five-petalled flowers, all of which have a light at their center, which makes the dome sparkle with light when lit. The top center of the dome also has a ring of lights surrounding an oculus window. This 20 foot diameter window was rediscovered when chapel renovation in 2009 uncovered the skylight, after having been plastered over for decades.
