The sign at the head of the trail explains that “Riparian means habitat along the bank of a natural watercourse.” It suggests that the hiker on this half-mile trail might look for geese, ducks, blue heron, green back heron, turtle, beavers, woodchucks, and cattails. This walking trail at Sertoma Park goes through a combination of woodland, wetlands, and prairie land and has interpretive posts and signs to identify points of interest along the way.
The Riparian Trail is just one of the two miles of walkways that wind through the 100 acre Outdoor Campus. The asphalt trails are wheelchair accessible, but bicycles are not allowed. Leashed dogs are welcome, but owners are responsible for cleaning up waste. A brisk walk takes about a half hour but longer is needed if you stop to smell the flowers or listen to the birds. Trails are open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
