The interior of "The Leg" (pronounced ledge) was built between 1913-1920. Shortage of material, labour and funds because of World War I, slowed the construction of the massive building and it was not ready for partial occupancy until 1919.
The dome is above antechamber (the Rotunda) at the head of the grand staircase which provides the formal approach to the legislative chamber. The diameter of the dome is 16 meters (54 feet) and the height to the eye of the dome is 27 meters (87 feet). Within the dome are four panels each containing 5 gold rosettes.
Directly under the dome, a 4-meter (13-foot) opening in the floor is surrounded by an Italian marble balustrade. From the lower level, you can stand directly under the center of the dome but the view is a little restricted.
Hours Open: Open Daily 8am-8pm
From July 1 to the Labour Day long weekend in September, there are hourly guided tours.
