Switzerland did not take part in Word War II, but it was surrounded by warring countries. The Swiss troops were mobilized and served at the borders to defend any potential attack. There were no official fights between Swiss and other armed forces, but many incidents happened, usually caused by mistakes. So several hundred Swiss army members and civilians lost their lives during the war.
This memorial is located in the municipal cemetery of Birsfelden, near the South-West entrance. It is a raw granite block with one carved side. It shows a typical Swiss army helmet of this time and the coats of arms of Switzerland and Birsfelden.

Zur Erinnerung an die während der Grenzbesetzung 1939 - 1945 verstorbenen Wehrmänner unserer Gemeinde.
In English:
To commemorate the soldiers from our municipality who died during their sevice at the borders from 1939 to 1945.
