The whole Old Porvoo district received Europa Nostra award in 1995, "for ensuring the conservation of the Old Town of Porvoo by restoring the riverfront foundations, by lowering the level and repaving old streets as well as giving free advice to owners of old wooden buildings." From Finnish Europa Nostra website.
Europa nostra award commemoration plaque is found on the wall of the Old Town Hall building where is also Porvoo Museum. Coordinates point at the plaque location.
The mosaic-like town plan with its maze of streets and irregularly shaped plots dates back to the Middle Ages. Since then the town suffered many fires, but always citizens have rebuilt their houses on the same foundations.
The most famous sights in Porvoo are the shore houses that are now red, but they got their colour only in the late 18th century to honour of King Gustav III's arrival from Sweden.
The Old Porvoo district is an area about 18 hectares, with about 250 residential buildings and about 300 outbuildings. Roughly 700 people live in this area today.
