A pair of hunting hounds on the top portion of the columns of the imposing gates of Chirk castle.
They are made from iron and gate back to the 18th century. They commemorate (according to that staff member I asked) a pair of hunting dogs (Beagles) that were the best of the hunting pack. There is a strong tradition of hunting on this estate of the Myddelton's. They have a graveyard on site for both horses and dogs.
The magnificent iron gates are dated 1719 and bear the coat-of-arms of the Myddelton family of Chirk Castle. They were made by Robert and John Davies, Brothers of Croesfoel Forge, near Bersham, Wrexham and were erected between 1719 and 1721.
Breed: Beagle

Date Built: 1719
