Nara-koen Park is located near the center of the city of Nara, Japan extending about 4 kilometers from east to west, and about 2 kilometers from south to north making it the biggest municipal park in Japan. Many deer graze along the spacious lawns, frolic on the grass, and roam the woodlands. The deer are usually associated with a sacred white deer - one of the legends of the Kasuga Taisha Shrine. They are of course protected animals. Inside the park area are Todai-ji Temple, Kofuku-ji Temple, Kasuga-taisha Shrine and many other historic structures. The park is a magnificent place to see some of the history of Japan, many of the shrines and temples including the amazing five storey pagoda called the Sarusawe-ike. The park has wonderful flora including sakura (cherry blossoms), andromeda, and many other flowers. The park is swarming with tourists every day of the year, but even more so during the more scenic months. There are some huge events in the park including the Deer Horn Cutting Ceremony in October , The Nara Toka-e light festival in August and the Shini-u fire festival in March which are huge events and attract tens of thousands more to the park lands.

This park has so many wonderful places to visit we hope that you will enjoy the beauty of it. Make sure you allow yourself enough time so you won't miss any of it.
