The Dalesway – Ilkley to Bowness-on-Windermere

A long distance hiking path that starts in Ilkley in Yorkshire and finishes at Bowness in the Lake District. It can of course be done the other way round, but although Ilkley is an attractive town, Bowness is thought to be the nicer place to finish.

At 82 miles the Dales Way is not the longest, nor the hardest trail in the world, but passes through varied and beautiful scenery. It can be enjoyed by experienced walkers, but there enough place so stop along the route that inexperienced walkers can also enjoy it.
The idea behind the Dales Way is to have a hiking trail that follows each of the major rivers in the Yorkshire Dales, finishing at Lake Widermere.
It starts by following theRiver Wharfe, to its source on Cam Fell. It then follows the Dee in Dentdale and the Lune in the Howgill Fells. The path then cuts across the South Lakeland Fells to Lake Windermere.
On the way the path crosses the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Lake District National Park.
There are plenty of Bed and Breakfast accommodation and hotels along the route but it is recommended that you book in advance.
There also a number of companies that can arrange accommodation, but also arrange luggage transport along the route.
If you’re stating the walk at Ilkley the trail starts at western end of town near the Old Bridge. This is an old pack horse bridge that crosses the River Wharfe, the river you will be walking alongside for the first part of the walk.
